There are more than 20 golf courses within a reasonable distance of Pattaya. The green fees, caddies and golf cart rates vary, depending upon the courses you wish to play. Clubs can be hired at most of the courses, and the facilities at all clubhouses are excellent.
Virtually next door to the Thai Polo & Equestrian Club is the Siam Country Club, which was established in 1971. It has a three-star, 18-hole course, and a four-star clubhouse. Set in gentle hills with large trees give it the feeling of Western golf courses.
Another recommended course nearby is St. Andrews, considered one of the best in the area. Designed by Desmond Muirhead with the idea of making the golfer play against nature, this course is a serious challenge and golf carts are compulsory. It is an 18-hole, 72 par links style course in Banchang, Rayong.
The Sanctuary of Truth is a gigantic wooden construction covering an area of more than two rai (about one-third of a hectare). The top point of the building is about 105 metres from the ground. It was constructed to withstand the wind and sunshine on the seashore at Rachvate Cape in Naklua. The building is covered with wooden carved sculptures on a 1:1 replica scale, and designed to mirror the great buildings of Angkor Wat in Cambodia. The work is still in progress.
This is Southeast Asia’s largest botanical gardens, but also has cultural shows of traditional Thai dancing, musical displays and elephant shows, alongside a mini-zoo.
Originally intended to be a fruit orchard with mangoes, pineapples, oranges, coconuts and other regional fruits when Pisit and Nongnooch Tansacha purchased 1,500 rai (240 hectares) of land in 1954. Due to Mrs Nongnooch’s personal interest in botany the land was converted into a botanical gardens and opened to the public in 1980.
Attractions include the Orchid Garden, with 670 or so species of native orchids; the Fountain Garden, Clay Pot Garden, Thai Topiary, Bougainvillea, Bon Sai, Rock, Cactus and Succulent, man-made waterfalls, a lake, Stonehenge replica, Butterfly House, Mini-zoo with monkeys, gibbons, tigers, birds.
The world’s most popular children’s channel opened the world’s first Cartoon Network themed waterpark in late 2014. Called Cartoon Network Amazone it has 10 entertainment zones from powering up with Ben 10 on all-new high-speed water rollercoasters, or going vertical with Jake from Adventure Time. For the little ones, Cartoon Network’s characters, such as Gumball, Darwin and The PowerPuff Girls await them at Cartoonival, the world’s largest aqua playground with over 150 water attractions.
The premier sailing club in Thailand, the Royal Varuna Yacht Club (RVYC) is located in a secluded cove between Pattaya and Jomtien. It is a family-oriented club for sailors of all abilities, from the uninitiated to serious racers with a year-round sailing program with cruising and racing. Great facilities include a stunning clubhouse, restaurant, swimming pool, junior clubhouse, boat storage and accommodation. An ideal place to give your children some freedom in safe surroundings. Rental boats (Laser, Hobie, Optimist, RS Quba and RS Vision) for racing and leisure are available to members and guests.
